We depend on experience and the “tried and true” procedure to protect us, when a hurricane is forecasted!
The key word in successfully handling a hurricane is PREPARE! There are some very important things that you can and should do in an effort to be ready for the event. Experts will always tell you to create your Hurricane Kit. Here are some of the basic components to include in standard kit, realizing that each one is individual in nature depending on the specific needs of the user.
1. First gather up all your important paperwork and those “can’t live without” photos. These need to be placed in waterproof bags ( Zip-loc) and then put into a waterproof container with a tightly fitting lid.
2. In your spare time, think ahead and take some videos or still shots of both the interior and exterior of your home. These could be very beneficial if you need to file a claim with the insurance company and need verification as to what you lost.
3. If your decision is to evacuate for the storm, see if you can go stay with relatives if they love close enough by to make sense. If not, pick a nice motel that is out of the path of the storm, choosing a direction that is perpendicular to the storms path. If neither is an option, many of the cities in this area offer “shelters” which are high school gyms with wall to wall cots. As last resort, it will work.
4. Oops! Don’t forget about the pets. Many motels and hotels will not take pets, so you need to research ahead of time which ones do and what are their policies.
5. You should select a specific spot that everyone knows about where you keep a bag with several changes of clothes to be used in an emergency. Don’t forget to include sleeping wear, you could be away for several nights.
6. Naturally the kits needs tangible items ( like the picture shows). Here is a brief list: extra cash, batteries, flashlights, battery operated radio/TV, bottled water (one gallon per person per day for 3 days), toilet paper, non-perishable foods, can opener, candles, matches, RX’s, and small children’s needs like diapers, wipes, formula, food and toys, books or games. Many people will be standing in lines for food and water and ICE, if the recovery takes longer than expected.
7. Plan on having “no power” for anything for at least 72 hours. That means no gasoline, no ATM’s, no A/C and no electric to cook.
8. If you decide to “tough-out” the storm and stay at home, you will need to think about just where you are gong to locate yourself and your family during the actually blow-over. You need to pick a room that is not on the exterior of the house, one that has all four walls inside and has plumbing for structural stability and one that is going to be “downwind” from the direction of the storm’s path. That means one that is on the opposite side of the house from the direction the wind is blowing.
9. If you are staying and do not have “Impact Glass Window’s”, cover your windows with 5/8th plywood. Forget the old wives tale about criss-crossing your windows with duct or sealing tape. It does not work. If you can’t afford the plywood or can’t handle the installation – Leave Town.
10. Lastly, if you decide to stay - Let the news media cover the storm and the damage. Stay inside and don’t be an idiot. A brick or piece of tile traveling at a speed of 100-140 mph will definitely ruin your day and perhaps terminate your existence.
11. The Good News is that homes built in Florida in the last 25 years are the best built homes in the country, based on structural building codes. So, don’t let hurricanes keep you from enjoying what Florida can offer.
For the “What it’s Worth File”. It’s one thing to get advice from someone who has read or heard about what a hurricane is like, but being a “Hurricane Charley Survivor”, I can tell you what to expect and how to protect yourself. I would recommend that you work with a realtor who has a “Survivor T-shirt” when you make your move to Florida. Real world experience beats all the “How To” and “What To” manuals you can carry!
