If you’re moving to Clarksville you’d better bring your fishing pole. One of the great things about living here is the absolute wealth of fishing opportunities: that is, if you like to fish.
I grew up fishing here. Being reared in a rural part of the area it came natural. My dad worked long hours but he found time to take me on many Saturday trips and I was bitten by the fishing bug. Those are some of the best memories I still recall from my childhood.
Now I’ve been able to re-create some of those same memories with my own children and grandchildren. I hope they’ll remember them just as I did.
Within an hour’s drive or less we have access to the waters of Kentucky Lake, Barkley Lake, a dozen or more smaller lakes on Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge, the Cumberland River (which flows through downtown Clarksville), and numerous smaller creeks and tributaries. All are teeming with a variety of fish species.
My particular favorite is the bass, both largemouth and smallmouth. Our relatively moderate climate allows me to fish for them practically year-round. Spring is my favorite, mainly because of the myriad of new life that abounds at each turn. Come summer we break out the shorts, sandals and sunscreen as both the air and water temps creep up. The fish hangout on deeper dropoffs and heavier cover. I really enjoy fishing at night during this period.
Fall brings the first cool nights and crisp mornings. The bass start moving back shallow into the bays feeding on schools of shad minnows. Anybody who likes fishing topwater lures can have a ball. As winter rolls in a lot of my fishing friends stow away their tackle in favor of deerstands and duck blinds. Not me. My best smallmouth days have been in November to January. I make a line of lures that are deadly for these smallmouth and typically catch some 5lb plus fish during these cold water months.
Many of my real estate clients share my love for this sport and I’ve been able to share a boat with some of them. I’ve shared information with many others. If you’re moving to Clarksville let us help you find your new house. If we can talk some fishing during the process, that’s just a bonus.
