Neighborhood and Community Information
The town of Kannapolis, straddling the Cabarrus and Rowan County lines, is in the midst of a metamorphosis. With the creation of a new national multi-million dollar BioTech Facility funded by billionaire David Murdock, Kannapolis is now on the map. Mr. Murdock purchased the former Cannon Mills property, has razed many of the buildings, and erected a showplace called the North Carolina Research Campus right in downtown Kannapolis. What a wonderful opportunity to create something amazing by making a mark with cutting-edge research in the field of biotechnology.
Kannapolis is part of the greater-Charlotte area, and the region surrounding this city is one of the top growth areas in the country. North Carolina is consistently at the top of Site Selection Magazine’s business climate ranking, and Kannapolis’ competitive tax structure, incentives, location, and eagerness to partner with business make the city attractive to relocating or expanding businesses. The city is strategically located along the I-85 corridor, just a 30-minute drive from uptown Charlotte.
Kannapolis is also well-known as the birthplace and hometown of the late Dale Earnhardt. There is even a statue of “The Intimidator” located downtown Kannapolis which is visited by many race fans during the three big races held at The Lowes Motor Speedway each year.
In the past decade, a new a $4 million YMCA, a Senior Center, a Public Library, a baseball stadium for the Kannapolis Intimidators which is a Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and Kannapolis Gateway Businesses Park are examples of the successful partnerships that are improving the community, attracting new business and creating new jobs.
