Lance Armstrong and Ogden, UT

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner is considering in competing in the Xterra USA Championship on September 24, 2011 at Snowbasin Ski Resort.  Armstrong did a surprise visit to Snowbasin last Wednesday, scouting the course for the event.  Lance biked along an 18-mile course from Pineview Reservoir to Snowbasin and then completed a six-mile trail run to help decided whether he will participate in the championship. Lance Edward Armstrong (born Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18, 1971) is an American former professional road racing cyclist and the founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research and support. He last rode for (and helped found) UCI ProTeam Team RadioShack.

In October 1996 he was diagnosed as having testicular cancer with a tumor that had metastasized to his brain and lungs. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor. He went on to win the Tour de France each year from 1995 to 2005, and is the only person to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins.

In 1999, he was named the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 2000 he won the Prince of Asturias Award in Sports. In 2002, Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year.  He was also named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the years 2002–2005. He received ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 2003. Armstrong announced his retirement from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but returned to competitive cycling in January 2009, and finished third in the 2009 Tour de France.  If Lance participates, this would be the first major venue to welcome Lance since his recent retirement.

Welcome to Utah Lance!!

Snowbasin will be hosting the Winter Dew Tour again this February! The Winter Dew Tour announced the full schedule for the 2011-12 seasons and confirmed it will close out the season with the Winter Dew Tour Championships on February 9-12 at the Snowbasin Resort.  The Dew Tour will be showcasing the world’s top free ski and snowboard athletes competing in superpipe and slopestyle. This year’s championship will also feature the year-end awards ceremony.  Snowbasin will be welcoming back the Dew Tour in February of 2012 and will showcase the resort to a worldwide audience. Men and women come from all over the country to compete in this incredible event!  Imagine the amount of people that will be coming from all over the world to see this event.  This should demonstrate to our out of town visitors the sports appeal of the Ogden and Northern Utah area.

Back in 2011, Snowbasin stop set an all-time Winter Dew Tour attendance record and hopes to break it.  This event will feature premier 22-foot superpipes and the highest level slopestyle courses at each stop. Cornerstone elements including live music and a festival village will be additional attractions of the tour.

It’s Time for a Swim!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Open water swimming is all the rage in Utah!  Triathlons are becoming quite the rage here in Utah.  To be able to swim in a large body of water surrounding yourself by mountains and glorious scenery versus the pool deck of an average pool, is what summer is all about.  Open water swimming is it for many in Utah and is growing stronger as well.  Open water swimming features enough forgiving conditions to allow anyone to participate.  A pond, lake or even the ocean won’t limit the young athletes.  The races on June 11th had competitors ranging from 22-62 years in age.

Open water swimming does have its own set of challenges though.  Different swimming conditions with each open body of water.  Conditions are always changing, the water can be smooth and glassy and in the next it can be rough and choppy.   Open water swimming has its own set of challenges that sets itself from the traditional swimming matches.  The growing interest of triathlons is also giving the open water swimming sport a boost. In 2010, there were over 60 triathlon-related events in Utah that included swimming legs.

Here in Utah, we have the Great Salt Lake and many reservoirs up and down the Wasatch front.  The Deer Creek Open Water Marathon Swim is scheduled for August 13, 2011 at Deer Creek Reservoir that is just north east of Provo and will host races of one mile, 5k, 10k and 10 miles.  Some people think all that Utah has is camping and now we are becoming well known for our open water swimming.  It’s just another great reason why I love to live and work here in Utah.

America’s Toughest Stage Race–Tour of Utah

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Utah’s most prestigious bicycle race will be centered right here in the heart of Ogden.  The Tour of Utah, August 9th – 14th, a six day, 409-mile race through the Wasatch  Range and surrounding communities will feature approximately 120 of the world’s top male cyclists representing 15 teams.

  • On the first stage, racers will start near the Ogden Amphitheater on Historic 25th Street, then head to North Ogden Divide to make three laps around a 38.5 mile loop that goes over the divide, around Pineview Reservoir, down Ogden Canyon and back to the divide.  The race will finish back at the Ogden Amphitheater.

What a great opportunity to show the world that Ogden, Utah has a lot to offer to its community and to the world.

  • Stage two will consist of a 100-mile course that starts on the north side of Utah Lake and ends in Provo.
  • As in past years, the third stage will be held at Miller Motorsports Park.
  • The fourth stage on August 13th will consist of 11 laps around a 7.4 mile course in downtown Salt Lake City with the tour wrapping up on Sunday, August 14.
  • The traditional fifth stage is a 100-mile route from Park City to Snowbird resort.

This is the time to visit Utah, come see all that Utah has to offer and catch a glimpse of why I love to work and live here!

Why Buy a Home in Ogden? For Sports

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

When it is really hot outside this summer it’s hard to think of winter.  However, some good news was announced this week.

Snowbasin will host the Winter Dew Tour again this coming February.   You probably ask–what is it?  Well, it includes events in men’s and women’s divisions in snowboarding and freeskiing in both superpipe and slopestyle format.  These are very fascinating events to watch in person or on TV.

To make the tour even better, Snowbasin will construct a bigger superpipe.  It will have Olympic-size 22-foot high walls.  Only a few mountains around the world have a 22-foot pipe.

Why is this important to Ogden as well as to Utah?  Because of the dollars generated into the economy during the three day event from athletes, fans, and media folks.

It’s a big deal.  It’s exciting.  It’s fun.  Congratulations and way to go Snowbasin!

The Weekend and Real Estate

Friday, September 25th, 2009

What are you doing this weekend?

In Ogden, UT the weather is going to be beautiful…if that is possible.  The forecast is sunny and warm.  A perfect weekend to do anything you want or need to do.

For years, I spent the weekends looking for a new home.  Yes, we would do what “needed” to be done and off in the car we went to find our dream home.  Perry, Liberty, South Ogden and west of Ogden and Roy were all possibilities. This weekend is a perfect weekend if you are thinking of finding a new home.

It is also a perfect weekend to do home improvements–to fix up your home in case you decide you want to sell your home or just get it ready for winter.  It will be warm enough to clean out the garage or clean the carpets or paint.  Whatever needs fixin!

And, of course, don’t forget the yard work or the garden if you have one.  There is always some bush that needs a trim or as I say, a “haircut.”   And…the garden is winding down. We have square foot boxes as well as rows of veggies in the dirt.  I am going to plant carrots and lettuce and spinach in a 4X4 to be covered with a clear plastic cover so after Christmas I can look farward to fresh produce.

If you plan to recreate, ENJOY.  The weather in Ogden will be perfect for hiking or rock climbing or four wheeling or just about anything you want to do outside.  And most outdoor activities are within an hour’s reach.

So…it will be a perfect weekend in Ogden to do whatever you want or “need” to do.

PS.  Don’t forget, if you find that home you want to buy or you want to sell your home, let me know.  I’d love to help you with your dreams!
