Checklist for Moving

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

I recently ran across some great information for you and your teenager who is getting ready to move out.  This is good information for all of us.

After graduation, the ultimate way to prove this level of independence is to move out of the house and take care of oneself. The responsibility is now yours and the bills will be addressed to you.  Whether you are going to college or not, moving out of the house tacks on a whole bunch of price tags that your parents have taken care of and paid for all of these years.  Now you have to think about these costs, such as rent, food, phone, internet, utilities, transportation and also tuition, books and student fees if you are planning on going to school. The thought of these new expenses and this new venture of moving out can be intimidating, but there are things that you can do to help make your transition less stressful.

  • Plan ahead and start thinking early about moving out of the house. Consider where you want to live and what best fits your preferences.  This way you can start planning and preparing yourself and your parents for the move.
  • Budget and learn how to handle your money.  This involves getting your first job and maybe talking to your parents about an allowance.  Start a savings account and ask your parents what they spend their money on.  Think about where your money is going. Do you shop or eat out regularly? Try to limit unnecessary spending.
  • Use your skills and learn more.  Do you know how to change a tire or change a light bulb?  Can you use your skills to save you time and money and not have to user other resources to get things accomplished?
  • Start packing and start packing early.  You need to start sorting through your belongings and this way you can start to determine what items you are going to need for your new place.  By sorting and packing early, this should eliminate any unnecessary trips to go get something you forgot late at night.

Just take breaks and take time to relax during this process as well, because moving is stressful.  I hope these ideas help you and your family get through the moving process smoothly.

Ogden Ranks 11th in Mass Transit

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

The Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical area is ranked 11th overall based on its share of working-age residents who live near a transit stop, the frequency of transit service and the share of jobs reachable via transit. It includes Weber, Davis and Morgan counties. The Salt Lake City metro area is ranked third and the Provo metro area placed ninth.  This study compared to an average of 69 percent for all 100 metro areas found that 82 percent of the working-age residents in the Ogden-Clearfield metro area live near a mass transit stop such as a bus or light rail. The median wait time is 12.6 minutes during rush hour.  In addition, the study determined that 42 percent of all jobs in the Ogden-Clearfield metro area are reachable via mass transit within 90 minutes.

The Brookings Institution’s study analyze route and schedule information  from 371 transit systems in the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas to determine how effective those systems give people access to employment.  The Utah Transit Authority, otherwise known here in Utah as the UTA received high marks from Brookings.

While the economy steadily seems to improve, it’s nice to know that we do have effective access to jobs in the metro area via transit.  Metro areas need to constantly craft comprehensive visions not only for how to create more jobs, but also how to link people to those jobs efficiently. The Wasatch Front is a leader in the country in mass transportation, but we are also one of the more highly polluted corridors.  This has to due mainly with the way the valley is nestled here against the Wasatch Mountains. So it is extremely important that Utah continues to strive to have such high standards in the way we commute and the quality of our air.

Other than just buses and trains, the Utah Transit Authority has been able to provide better job access through creative options.  The UTA operates more than 400 van pools that enable thousands to travel every day to their place of employment.  They also continue to strive to meet the growth of Utah.  Every day we all need to get from point A to point B and the UTA is one of those resources making this possible for us This is another reason why I love to work, play and live here in Ogden, Utah.

Why Buy a Home in the Second Healthiest State?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Well, Utah has done it again!!!

What is another reason to buy in Utah, specifically in the Ogden area?

Utah is now the second, after Vermont, “healthiest” state in the nation! I heard it on the nightly news at www.fox13now.com.

I read an article provided by Fobes by Rebecca Ruiz referencing some of the catagories determing the ranking: how many children receive recommended vaccinations, obesity, smoking rates, cancer deaths, number of doctors per capita, low rate of child poverty, public health infrastructure, violent crimes, alcohol consumption, rates of infectious disease, number of preventable hospitalizations, levels of air polution, to name a few.

Last week we were the happiest and now this week we are the healthiest. Way to go UTAH!!!

I feel one of the reasons for being ranked so high as being the healthiest state, but not mentioned, could be all the sport activites locally available. I think I will do a blog on all the sport activities right here in Ogden and the surrounding areas. If you would help me out by letting me know which activites you and/or your family participate in, I would appreciate it. With your input, no sport would be left out. There are a lot of indoor sports as well as outdoor and seasonable sports. Please help me out here because I am not familiar with all the sports and this could be a learning experience for all.

Again, congratulatons Utah and what a great place to live! If you’re are happy and you’re healthy, stamp your feet…
