Lance Armstrong and Ogden, UT

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner is considering in competing in the Xterra USA Championship on September 24, 2011 at Snowbasin Ski Resort.  Armstrong did a surprise visit to Snowbasin last Wednesday, scouting the course for the event.  Lance biked along an 18-mile course from Pineview Reservoir to Snowbasin and then completed a six-mile trail run to help decided whether he will participate in the championship. Lance Edward Armstrong (born Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18, 1971) is an American former professional road racing cyclist and the founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research and support. He last rode for (and helped found) UCI ProTeam Team RadioShack.

In October 1996 he was diagnosed as having testicular cancer with a tumor that had metastasized to his brain and lungs. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor. He went on to win the Tour de France each year from 1995 to 2005, and is the only person to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins.

In 1999, he was named the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 2000 he won the Prince of Asturias Award in Sports. In 2002, Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year.  He was also named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the years 2002–2005. He received ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 2003. Armstrong announced his retirement from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but returned to competitive cycling in January 2009, and finished third in the 2009 Tour de France.  If Lance participates, this would be the first major venue to welcome Lance since his recent retirement.

Welcome to Utah Lance!!

~Royals Athletic Hall of Honor~

Guess who is going to be inducted to Roy High’s Royals Athletic Hall of Honor? Jim McMahon!  The school’s student body has been preparing this week for a visit from the famous alum Jim McMahon. McMahon who engineered a Super Bowl XX victory with the Chicago Bears in 1985 will be inducted on Friday.  There will be festivities for the school’s student body on Friday and then on Friday night’s game with Box Elder it will continue.  The tickets at $5.00 each for the game.  That night during half time Edwards and Ernie Jacklin , McMahon’s head coach at Roy, will address the crowd.  Other events include showcasing the Royal Choir, marching band, Royalaires and cheerleaders. Roy has also had an impressive 3-1 start to this year’s season. Jim played for the Royals in 1976 and 1977 and then went onto play for BYU.

Roy is also planning a “White-Out” for the game, so fans will be encouraged to wear white for the contest.  Also, don’t be surprised to see plenty of headbands and sunglasses which were McMahon’s trademark during his NFL career. McMahon now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona and his parents as well as his siblings and former teammates will participate in this event. McMahon is also planning on participating in a fundraising golf tournament on Monday at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. Pretty fantastic to have a little bit of fame come back to the home town of Roy, Utah!

Ogden, An Industry Hub

Friday, September 9th, 2011

In an article, published August 22, 2011, The Wall Street Journal named Ogden one of seven cities that have become leading hubs in specific industries ranging from life sciences to beer brewing to outdoor sports. Ogden has received quite a bit of media attention over the past several years regarding its reinvention as a center for the outdoor products industry. Most of this attention has come from publications aimed at specific groups and niche magazines.

The article says “Entrepreneurs are moving there and flourishing in the teeth of a bleak economy,” about the selected cities in general.  “The cities, in turn, are nurturing the entrepreneurs by giving them access to funding, mentors and facilities.  Being there means getting access to a much wider range of suppliers, customers, employees and industry experts.”

This article specifically cites that Ogden has the same factors that local officials point to: close proximity to mountains, canyons, rivers and Olympic facilities that provide ideal product testing ground; the relatively low cost of doing business and a strong local talent pool, among others.  The Wall Street Journal made it’s selections based on a industry growth data from a mapping project at Harvard Business School.  The newspaper also spoke with industry experts, local economic officials and the entrepreneurs themselves.  Ogden has long been a favorite location among outdoor enthusiasts, but the recent growth of the outdoor products industry happened under the watch of Mayor Matthew Godfrey.  This is a fantastic place to be, right here in Ogden.

With interest rates so low, now is the time to buy a home in Ogden, if you aren’t already here. If you are already here, this is a perfect time to make the move into the home you have been thinking about.  I am here to help you…just let me know!

It’s Time for a Swim!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Open water swimming is all the rage in Utah!  Triathlons are becoming quite the rage here in Utah.  To be able to swim in a large body of water surrounding yourself by mountains and glorious scenery versus the pool deck of an average pool, is what summer is all about.  Open water swimming is it for many in Utah and is growing stronger as well.  Open water swimming features enough forgiving conditions to allow anyone to participate.  A pond, lake or even the ocean won’t limit the young athletes.  The races on June 11th had competitors ranging from 22-62 years in age.

Open water swimming does have its own set of challenges though.  Different swimming conditions with each open body of water.  Conditions are always changing, the water can be smooth and glassy and in the next it can be rough and choppy.   Open water swimming has its own set of challenges that sets itself from the traditional swimming matches.  The growing interest of triathlons is also giving the open water swimming sport a boost. In 2010, there were over 60 triathlon-related events in Utah that included swimming legs.

Here in Utah, we have the Great Salt Lake and many reservoirs up and down the Wasatch front.  The Deer Creek Open Water Marathon Swim is scheduled for August 13, 2011 at Deer Creek Reservoir that is just north east of Provo and will host races of one mile, 5k, 10k and 10 miles.  Some people think all that Utah has is camping and now we are becoming well known for our open water swimming.  It’s just another great reason why I love to live and work here in Utah.

Snowbasin Opening for the Summer–Historic!!

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Snowbasin Resort, in the mountains near Ogden, will be re-opening for weekend summer skiing beginning June 11. It is the first time the resort has opened in the summer!

Resort officials say above average snowpack and a 100-inch base will allow them to remain open as long as conditions allow. Skiers will be able to use the Needles Gondola to access multiple runs from 8 am to 2 pm. Snowbasin is well known as the ultimate mountain luxury!  With diverse terrain for beginner ease to challenging expert runs, Snowbasin also offers three progressive terrain parks and 26km of groomed Nordic trails. With 3,000 skiable acres and 3,000 vertical feet, Snowbasin is best known for wide-open bowls, gladed runs, manicured groomers, powder stashes days after a storm, and rarely a lift line.

Snowbasin has world-class snowmaking and one of the most advanced lift systems in the West. Enjoy award-winning cuisine including mountaintop dining with spectacular views and magnificent day lodges.

Make the most of day on the mountain with more than 100 certified instructors, adaptive programs, state-licensed day care and children’s programs. And for more family fun, don’t miss the four-lane lift assisted tubing hill.

Snowbasin is just 35 miles north of Salt Lake City with easy access to the Park City Area.  Après ski in Downtown Ogden, just 17 miles away! How great it is to live in Ogden, Utah, where just miles away you can go snow skiing in the middle of summer!

Tundra Swan Day in Northern Utah

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Did you know that there is as many as 35, 000 swans in Utah when the swan migration peaks in mid-March?  It looks like Utah is not just a seagull state after all.

This Saturday, March 12, 2011, is the state’s official Tundra Swan Day in Northern Utah.  How great it would be to be able to see these gorgeous birds!  The Tundra Swan uses the Great Salt Lake and the surrounding wetlands as one of its favorite wintering spots and now is the time to see this grand bird!

The viewing will take place at three sites-Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, which is west of Farmington, Salt Creek Waterfowl Management Area which is west of Corrine and the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge west of Brigham City. The viewing at Farmington Bay & Salt Creek WMAs runs from 9am to 3pm and they will have spotting scopes available to you can get a better look at the swans. You can call the DWR’s Northern Region office at 801-476-2740 and the Beer River Migratory Bird Refuge at 435-723-5887 or you can go to  www.standard.net for more information.

They say that the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is one of the best places to visit and that is just a hop skip and a jump north of Ogden.  They have a 12-mile auto tour loop that you will be able to see these beautiful birds.  These magnificent swans migrate northward to their breeding grounds in the Artic tundra of Alaska and Canada as the weather warms here in Utah.

It always fascinates me that Utah has so many grand opportunities like this right here in our back yard to take advantage of. What do the Tundra Swans have to do about buying and selling homes in Ogden, Utah? It’s a great place to live! Please contact me if you or anyone you know would like to buy or sell a home in the Ogden area.
