New Additions to Ogden’s Union Station

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The beloved Union Station in downtown Ogden will be getting some new paving stones around the main plaza fountain.  The older cobblestones have been there for more than 30 years and won’t need to worry, they will still stay…they will just be shifted off to the side. The cobblestones were originally salvaged from loading docks north of the station where Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA’s)  Intermodal Uub is now and they were too big and uneven to make a good walking surface.

The Union Station wants to redesign the plaza anyway and even issued a plea to the public to come help rip out the stones, but it didn’t work. The cobble stones weighed about 20 pounds each so it turned out to be an impossible job to do by hand. Finally enough money was raised to hire a contractor to bring in machinery to rip out the old stones and put in the new plaza.   Among the flat paving stones that will be placed in the plaza, anyone willing to pay a $100 donation will get a stone engraved with their name.

The hedges that flanked the sides of the plaza will be taken out and it will free up space around the linden trees and will open up the front of the station.  The cobblestones will then be used to pave the parking circles on the north and south ends of the plaza area.

It’s great Ogden’s Union Station will be getting these new stones as well as the changes that are going to be made.  It just shows you how the people of Ogden take pride in their town and another reason to buy a home in Ogden.

“Have a Heart” in Ogden, UT

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Since 1998, Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors and Northern Wasatch Home Builders Association have partnered to provide a home at a substantial discount to military families and special-needs families in the area. They look to help people with median incomes who don’t have much of a chance buying a home under normal circumstances.

This program is called Have A Heart. The newest home being rolled out is almost completed at 469 E. 1625 N. in North Ogden. The house is estimated to be worth about $200,000 not including the donations. The Association of Realtors started the program by refurbishing existing homes. To keep the costs down in all of the homes built for the program, many contractors and businesses have donated time and materials, knocking about 25% of the total price. What isn’t donated is usually purchased at discounted prices.

This is such a neat way that the people and businesses are giving back to their community here in Ogden and this is why I love living here!

Ogden River Project

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

The Ogden River comes down out of the Ogden Canyon and rolls on down past Rainbow Gardens and down along the parkway and it keeps going and going.  There is a $50,000 plan developed by Pittsburgh-based Urban Design Associates.  This plan was unveiled to the public back in January and is awaiting approval from the RDA board which is made up of city council members.

This plan is to have a development that will have 750 housing units, including lofts, apartments, townhomes and single family dwellings.  The master plan also recommends that the project be built in multiple phases by several developers so that housing has a variety of architectural styles including traditional and Victorian. This development would also feature a green space along the Ogden River and a half-acre community garden. As many as 1,400 people could ultimately live within the project area and would also accommodate 25,000 square feet of retail space.

This is just another way that Ogden and it’s people are planning for the future and making Ogden such a great place to live!

Veterans Day Activities in Ogden

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Please come and celebrate Veterans Day with us in Ogden.

A Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, November 13th, starting at 11:11 AM.   It is the largest Veterans Day Parade  in Utah.  The parade route will be begin on Washington Blvd at 20th Street and will travel south to 23rd Street.  Then it will head west to Lincoln and continue south until it reaches the entrance to Lindquist Field.

The beginning of the parade will be graced with a flyover of F16′s from Hill AFB.  Every time I see these jets fly, tears weld in my eyes.  To me, they are a symbol of sacrifice and freedom.  A program and festivities are planned at the ball field.  EVERYONE is invited to attend.

Also, to celebrate Veterans Day, the Veterans Tribute Tower, a 30-foot clock tower, was erected at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Nursing Home on Monday, Nov. 8th.

It will be dedicated on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11th, with the unveiling at 3 PM at 1102 N 1200 S.   The 250-pound bell in the tower will chime on the hour, every hour, and play patriotic tunes.  This fine facility takes good care of our vets and was named after our Medal of Honor recipient.

Once again, please come and celebrate Veterans Day with us in Ogden.

Snow Covered Mountains and Ogden, Utah, are in the Spotlight

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

What’s another reason to buy a home in Ogden? A beautiful January night, cool and crisp. Right now,  Ogden is in the spotlight because there are so many  activities to enjoy.

The annual Sundance Film Festival is back in northern Utah.  Park City is the headquarters of the festival and many films are shown at the Perry Egyptian Theater in Ogden.  These independent films try to get backing for theatrical release.  Sometimes, stars can be seen as directors bring cast members.

For NBA fans, the Utah Jazz games are always fun to attend in Salt Lake, which is less than an hour drive.  Right now they are playing well and, Friday night, Hot Rod Huntley will be honored for his legendary voice of the Jazz for 35 years.

If you are into college basketball, Weber State University is also doing well.  The Big Sky honored guard Damian Lillard as player of the week for leading the team to two victorious homes wins.  Coach Randy Rahe and  the Wildcats record of 13-7,7-1 are keeping the team in the top of the league standings midway through the season.

And if you are a skier, night skiing at Powder Mountain should be on the list of things to do.  Snow is great because of the recent series of storms.  Be very careful of venturing out of the groomed trails.  Avalanche danger is very, very high.

These are just a few reasons to buy a home in the Ogden area.  Please contact me to help you find the home you are looking for.  If you thinking of a move, this is a great time to sell because of the tax credits available for buyers.

What’s Another Reason for Buying a Home in Ogden Utah Area? High Graduation Rates

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

If you have children,  education is very important.  And most important– attend your child’s graduatation from high school.

Graduation rates are high across the state of Utah.  According to the Standard-Examiner on Friday, January 15, 2010, Utah’s overall graduation rate has stayed at 88% for the past three years.

The following are the graduation rates for the high schools in Ogden and the surrounding areas: Ben Lomond 93%, Bonneville 94%, Fremont 97%, Ogden 88%, Roy 90%, and Weber 94%.

These percentages are impressive.

What’s another reason for buying a home in Ogden, Utah, and the surrounding communities?  High graduation rates!

Another Reason to Buy/Sell in the Ogden Area

employment

What’s another reason to buy/sell in the Ogden area? According to the Standard-Examiner, Ogden is surviving the economic downturn better than most Intermountain West metropolitan areas. According to a six state study done jointly by UNLV and the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Ogden’s economy is fairly diverse and has a lot of jobs in the public sector.  Also mentioned was Ogden’s minor dependence on the housing market.  Even though Ogden did have a higher than average share of employment in housing and construction, it was not nearly as bad as in other places.

This study was a comforting.

It was also comforting to learn that GSL Minerals Corp donated $12,000 worth of food to an Ogden foodbank because the need is 30% greater this year.

For those of us who are able during this time of the year, please give whatever you can–food, money or your time, to the many community services requesting help.  These kind of actions truly make our communities stronger as we help one another.

Another Reason to Buy a Home in the Ogden Area–WSU!

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Another reason to buy a home in Utah and the Ogden area is Weber State University.  The Sunday issue of the Standard Examiner ran an article  stating Forbes Magazine ranked WSU as one of the top public colleges and universities to attend in the nation.  It was ranked 43rd.  The rankings were based on 25% student student satisfaction with course instructors, 25% post graduate success, 16% likelihood of graduation from college within four years, and 20% on student loan debt rankings.

This is great news.  In other blogs I have mentioned Utah as one of  the happiest state, the healthiest state, one of the nation’s lowest unemployment rates and now the quality of education–right here in Ogden.

My own opinion is WSU is close, affordable and the qualtiy of education is impressive.  Not only did I graduate from Weber State years ago, but my son and daughter both graduated recently.  Because of Weber State and its opportunities,  my son and his WSU grad wife are both attending graduate school  and my daughter is a news reporter.

Congratulations Weber State!!!
