Lance Armstrong and Ogden, UT

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner is considering in competing in the Xterra USA Championship on September 24, 2011 at Snowbasin Ski Resort.  Armstrong did a surprise visit to Snowbasin last Wednesday, scouting the course for the event.  Lance biked along an 18-mile course from Pineview Reservoir to Snowbasin and then completed a six-mile trail run to help decided whether he will participate in the championship. Lance Edward Armstrong (born Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18, 1971) is an American former professional road racing cyclist and the founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research and support. He last rode for (and helped found) UCI ProTeam Team RadioShack.

In October 1996 he was diagnosed as having testicular cancer with a tumor that had metastasized to his brain and lungs. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor. He went on to win the Tour de France each year from 1995 to 2005, and is the only person to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins.

In 1999, he was named the ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year. In 2000 he won the Prince of Asturias Award in Sports. In 2002, Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year.  He was also named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the years 2002–2005. He received ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 2003. Armstrong announced his retirement from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but returned to competitive cycling in January 2009, and finished third in the 2009 Tour de France.  If Lance participates, this would be the first major venue to welcome Lance since his recent retirement.

Welcome to Utah Lance!!

~Royals Athletic Hall of Honor~

Guess who is going to be inducted to Roy High’s Royals Athletic Hall of Honor? Jim McMahon!  The school’s student body has been preparing this week for a visit from the famous alum Jim McMahon. McMahon who engineered a Super Bowl XX victory with the Chicago Bears in 1985 will be inducted on Friday.  There will be festivities for the school’s student body on Friday and then on Friday night’s game with Box Elder it will continue.  The tickets at $5.00 each for the game.  That night during half time Edwards and Ernie Jacklin , McMahon’s head coach at Roy, will address the crowd.  Other events include showcasing the Royal Choir, marching band, Royalaires and cheerleaders. Roy has also had an impressive 3-1 start to this year’s season. Jim played for the Royals in 1976 and 1977 and then went onto play for BYU.

Roy is also planning a “White-Out” for the game, so fans will be encouraged to wear white for the contest.  Also, don’t be surprised to see plenty of headbands and sunglasses which were McMahon’s trademark during his NFL career. McMahon now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona and his parents as well as his siblings and former teammates will participate in this event. McMahon is also planning on participating in a fundraising golf tournament on Monday at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. Pretty fantastic to have a little bit of fame come back to the home town of Roy, Utah!

Ogden, An Industry Hub

Friday, September 9th, 2011

In an article, published August 22, 2011, The Wall Street Journal named Ogden one of seven cities that have become leading hubs in specific industries ranging from life sciences to beer brewing to outdoor sports. Ogden has received quite a bit of media attention over the past several years regarding its reinvention as a center for the outdoor products industry. Most of this attention has come from publications aimed at specific groups and niche magazines.

The article says “Entrepreneurs are moving there and flourishing in the teeth of a bleak economy,” about the selected cities in general.  “The cities, in turn, are nurturing the entrepreneurs by giving them access to funding, mentors and facilities.  Being there means getting access to a much wider range of suppliers, customers, employees and industry experts.”

This article specifically cites that Ogden has the same factors that local officials point to: close proximity to mountains, canyons, rivers and Olympic facilities that provide ideal product testing ground; the relatively low cost of doing business and a strong local talent pool, among others.  The Wall Street Journal made it’s selections based on a industry growth data from a mapping project at Harvard Business School.  The newspaper also spoke with industry experts, local economic officials and the entrepreneurs themselves.  Ogden has long been a favorite location among outdoor enthusiasts, but the recent growth of the outdoor products industry happened under the watch of Mayor Matthew Godfrey.  This is a fantastic place to be, right here in Ogden.

With interest rates so low, now is the time to buy a home in Ogden, if you aren’t already here. If you are already here, this is a perfect time to make the move into the home you have been thinking about.  I am here to help you…just let me know!

Art Stroll…in Ogden UT

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Did you know here in Ogden, Utah, the first Friday of every month, there is an Art Stroll?   The stroll starts at 6 PM and most galleries stay open until 9 PM. This way you can check out all kinds of new exhibits after regular hours. Many of the galleries also host receptions with the opportunity to meet the local artists in person.  The participating art venues are along the Historic 25th Street, from Wall Avenue to Washington Boulevard. There are also a few more in surrounding neighborhoods and admission is free.  You can start at the gallery located at the Union Station and take yourself up 25th Street.  So many different pieces of art will be shown from paintings to ceramics and you will be able to meet with other art collectors/lovers along the way.  Most any of the exhibits will have a guide you can pick up, where you will be able to tell which businesses are participating.

After the art stroll, you can always stop at one of the many great restaurants on 25th Street and grab a bite to eat.  If you really are feeling creative after the stroll, you can stop by the Ogden Blue and pick up any kind of art supplies you could ever need to make your creations possible!

Snowbasin Opening for the Summer–Historic!!

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Snowbasin Resort, in the mountains near Ogden, will be re-opening for weekend summer skiing beginning June 11. It is the first time the resort has opened in the summer!

Resort officials say above average snowpack and a 100-inch base will allow them to remain open as long as conditions allow. Skiers will be able to use the Needles Gondola to access multiple runs from 8 am to 2 pm. While the snowpack in the mountains of northern Utah has thrilled outdoor enthusiasts, it’s got officials worried about the potential for severe flooding once temperatures warm enough to melt it.

Snowbasin is well known as the ultimate mountain luxury!  With diverse terrain for beginner ease to challenging expert runs, Snowbasin also offers three progressive terrain parks and 26km of groomed Nordic trails. With 3,000 skiable acres and 3,000 vertical feet, Snowbasin is best known for wide-open bowls, gladed runs, manicured groomers, powder stashes days after a storm, and rarely a lift line.

Snowbasin has world-class snowmaking and one of the most advanced lift systems in the West. Enjoy award-winning cuisine including mountaintop dining with spectacular views and magnificent day lodges.

Make the most of day on the mountain with more than 100 certified instructors, adaptive programs, state-licensed day care and children’s programs. And for more family fun, don’t miss the four-lane lift assisted tubing hill.

Snowbasin is just 35 miles north of Salt Lake City with easy access to the Park City Area.  Après ski in Downtown Ogden, just 17 miles away! How great it is to live in Ogden, Utah, where just miles away you can go snow skiing in the middle of summer!

Volunteers~Another Reason to Buy a Home in Ogden, UT

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

In May, Ogden City employees, business leaders and community volunteers traded in shirts, ties and cell phones in for shovels, rakes and gloves to make Junction City shine.  Now, more than 62 different locations around the city are sparkling!

This was the city’s third official Make a Difference Day and more than 1,000 volunteers took part with 60-65 percent of the volunteers being Ogden City employees. The city does not mandate that the employees pitch in on the service day, most stepped up and want to help out.  This is an incredible effort by all of the volunteers to take a day and help spruce up and clean the city limits.

The city helped in some areas by providing dirt, mulch and manpower.  The city council also donated $5,000 in city money to the cause, although the man hours saved by the volunteers far outweighed the money donated by the city council.  The council members also participated at locations ranging from the Salvation Army to the north site of the Nature Center on Mountain Road.

The volunteers have also been able to see what a difference their work that they did last year has done to this year.  The number of volunteers has risen each year as well. Cleaning up Ogden is a big undertaking but it has been a great group effort by many of the volunteers that work and live here in Ogden.

I’m so glad that I live in a city that is constantly growing and improving and has many people who live in it and constantly want to make it better!

Compare This Snow Pack in the Ogden, UT Area!

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Guess what?  Last year, I took the first picture of the mountains on May 4th, 2010.  I love the view and am thinking of framing it and hanging it in my great room.   I stumbled across it again while looking for another picture and noticed the snow pack.  Wow!

So today, May 4th, 2011, I took another picture of the same view for ya’ll to compare!  We have had record, and I mean record, snowfall this winter and spring.  You don’t believe it until you see it, especially if you do not live in this area.

Compare the leaves on the trees and bushes in each picture.  It is amazing.  Even today the temperature was cool for this time of year and spring around here is just beginning–the first of May!   What does this kind of weather do for fruit trees?  I have 14 of my own and it will be interesting to see what happens.

I will keep you posted…just where is all this snowpack going to go and how fast is it going to come down?  Pretty darn scary.

PS-Isn’t it beautiful? When you are ready to buy and/or sell a home in Ogden, UT, contact me and I will help you get exactly what you want, for the price you want.

Art and Dining on Ogden’s Historic 25th ST

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Crowley Gallery & Café

About 7 years ago, Tami Crowley and her husband opened Artists & Heirlooms, an art gallery on Ogden’s Historic 25th Street. They just changed the name to Crowley Gallery & Café last month and changed the space to include a dining area where patrons can enjoy artistically designed cuisine by chef John Ewing.  Tami said that she has always wanted to add a café to the gallery to make it a different experience for art strollers and collectors.

Their new chef John Ewing is all about creativity and fine foods.  After training at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, he went on to a career spanning more than three decades as head chef at several high-end dining establishments. He even has opened several of his own restaurants in Florida and Philadelphia. His dishes have a Carribean & European flair due to the fact that he spent time as a head chef on a small island in the Bahamas as well as studying as an apprentice with an Austrian chef.

This is going to be a great addition to the other fine places to dine and see art along Ogden’s Historic 25th Street.  And it’s another reason why I love to live here in Ogden. It’s because of places like this right here at my door step.  Buy a home in Ogden and join us!

New Additions to Ogden’s Union Station

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The beloved Union Station in downtown Ogden will be getting some new paving stones around the main plaza fountain.  The older cobblestones have been there for more than 30 years and won’t need to worry, they will still stay…they will just be shifted off to the side. The cobblestones were originally salvaged from loading docks north of the station where Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA’s)  Intermodal Uub is now and they were too big and uneven to make a good walking surface.

The Union Station wants to redesign the plaza anyway and even issued a plea to the public to come help rip out the stones, but it didn’t work. The cobble stones weighed about 20 pounds each so it turned out to be an impossible job to do by hand. Finally enough money was raised to hire a contractor to bring in machinery to rip out the old stones and put in the new plaza.   Among the flat paving stones that will be placed in the plaza, anyone willing to pay a $100 donation will get a stone engraved with their name.

The hedges that flanked the sides of the plaza will be taken out and it will free up space around the linden trees and will open up the front of the station.  The cobblestones will then be used to pave the parking circles on the north and south ends of the plaza area.

It’s great Ogden’s Union Station will be getting these new stones as well as the changes that are going to be made.  It just shows you how the people of Ogden take pride in their town and another reason to buy a home in Ogden.
