Ever heard of Granicrete countertops?

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Since we are planning on selling our current home in SE Portland and move into this fixer we bought a couple weeks ago in NE Portland we knew we needed to update our kitchen before we can put it on the market.  I will be listing our home as soon as it’s ready to show.  We had a horrible looking formica top from the 50′s, so that was definitely something we had to fix.

Most home buyers in the market these days will always notice what type of countertops homes have.  Of course granite is the favorite and some buyers will not settle for anything less.  The problem is the cost and prepration for the installation of granite,  until I discovered granicrete.

To keep it simple it’s basically 3 layers of concrete with coloring blended into the surface.  What you get is a gorgeous finished product that looks and feels like granite and is as durable as granite but half the cost.   The video shows the part of the process where the surface is torched to remove all the air pockets.

There are 2 other big advantages to granicrete.  1) It is applied over ANY existing countertops and does not require your lower cabinets to be re-inforced to support the weight of real granite countertops.2) It will never crack and break off like granite can do and most of us know someone who has cracked granite in their kitchen or bathroom.  I watched the installers take a hammer and hit a sample of granicrete  and hardly left a mark.  I was sold when I saw that.

So we’ve had new granicrete countertops a couple weeks now and we love them.   Most people that come over are wowed by the new look and don’t know what they are until we tell them.  Our kitchen has been transformed recently since the new countertops, flooring, and fresh paint throughout the kitchen.   We will be hoping that I can find a home buyer in Portland that will appreciate the work and love the fresh look when our house hits the Portland real estate market in about a month.

Day 1: Demolition!

This is what the carport looked like before demo

water damage ceiling and flooring

Today was the first day of renovating on our new home that we just closed on friday.  First project: Demolition.  A big dumpster arrived early this morning.  We knocked down an old scary carport structure that I could just about push the whole thing over with my hands.  It went well and we were able to completely bring down the whole structure in 1 day.  My friend Tony helped since he’s temporarily out of work for a while.  Also, some interior demo will be done this week.

The first interior project will be to repair the ceiling and on the main floor that was damaged when the last owner intentionally plugged the upstairs bathroom and turned on the water on her way out the door from being evicted.  The water soaked through the floor damaging the ceiling and main floor. I will try to show after pics soon to compare.

We invited some friends and family over on Saturday afternoon to get up close look at the house before the transformation starts.

Most people could see the vision and others couldn’t understand why we would buy such a fixer.   It really reminded me of home buyers that I’ve worked with in the past.  Some people can easily see the potential and visualize after repairs/remodeling and some homebuyers just have to have a finished product ready to move-in.  Every home buyers wants and needs are always so different,  that’s one reason that makes my job as Real Estate broker fun because every client and home is so unique,  I’m never exactly sure what I’m getting into, but it always seems to work out fine in the end.
