BIKING IN FLORIDA

Monday, January 24th, 2011

There are many reasons why Jan and I love living in Southwest Florida.  Biking opportunities are high on my list of favorites.  There is always room for improvement, but I have never lived in an area that is so bike-friendly.  The combination of year-round biking climate and availability of bike paths supported reaching my goal of more than 5,000 miles in 2010.

We are fortunate to live within 100 yards of the Lee/Collier County line, and less than 4 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.  I have favorite bike routes North, South, East, and West-depending on the direction of the wind.  My personal preference is to bike into the wind first, and then coast home when I’m tired.  My rides take me as far as the Fort Myers airport to the North, the Naples Pier to the South, the Gulf to the West, and Golden Gate to the East.  Both Fort Myers and Naples have great biking opportunities.

When we have a free day, we sometimes put our bikes on the car and drive to Sanibel.  Sanibel and Captiva have wonderful bike trails for exploring the islands.  Gasparilla Island is also a good destination for biking.  Further North, the Pinellas Trail goes from the Tampa/Clearwater area up to Tarpon Springs.  The Inverness Trail is North of Tampa, and the Gainesville area is blessed with many great bike trails.

If you enjoy biking, and you live in Southwest Florida or are considering a move here, e-mail me for more specific information-or better yet, share your Florida biking experiences with me.  I will be happy to share my favorite bike routes.  It’s a great way to stay in shape and have fun at the same time.

THE NEW HOME BUYER PROFILE

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

For many years Florida homebuyers looked like Northerners with gray hair, searching for a place to spend their retirement years—either seasonally or full time.  Then 5 or 6 years ago, “flippers” arrived on the scene looking for quick profits.  They would buy anything with a sign in the yard, and put it back on the market at a much higher price.  It was a time of chaos.

For the past several years, homebuyers of any kind were hard to find in Southwest Florida.  The flippers were in foreclosure, and the gray-haired Northerners were wary of a plunging housing market.  It didn’t help that their retirement nest eggs were devastated by the stock market, and their Northern homes were virtually unmarketable even if they wanted to move south.

This summer and fall, we have seen a steady stream of another kind of home buyer—the investor who sees current home prices as an unbelievable bargain.  It doesn’t hurt that their nest eggs have recovered a bit, interest rates are at a historic low, and the stock market has been sluggish.  This new home buyer is looking primarily in the “under $250,000” housing market, as a way to get their foot in the door in this highly desirable area.  They figure they can always “trade up” later on.

Many of these investors are within 10 years of retirement, and plan to use their new home as a vacation getaway, family retreat, or rent it out for a few years until they are ready to make their move.  They see current home prices as a rare opportunity to “get in at the bottom”.

There are many excellent reasons to own a home in Southwest Florida.  Add long term investment to the list.

SNOWBIRDS ARE MELTING AWAY

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Last Friday’s Bon Voyage party was an excellent sendoff, with almost 200 Spanish Wells CC members in attendance.  Good friends, great food, and a crowded dance floor dropped the curtain on another “season” in SW Florida.

For the next 6 months, those of us who remain here will enjoy low traffic, un-crowded stores, beaches, courses, and restaurants, lots of “twofers”, golf at reciprocal clubs, and warm sunshine.  Personally, I look forward to the end of the season as much as I enjoy having snowbird friends return in the fall.  The offseason is a great time to be in Bonita Springs.

Today as I biked south on Livingston to Pine Ridge, I ventured off the sidewalk and back in the bike lane for the first time in months.  Traffic was noticeably lighter and it felt safe again.  I stopped at a farmers market on the way home and picked up some fresh produce for the week.  Life is good in Bonita Springs, Florida—no matter the season.
