Lake Life in Austin, Texas

Friday, September 10th, 2010

As is the case most of the time in life you never can tell what the week will bring you. This week brought us Hermine and around 12 inches of rain in a 36 hour period (give or take depending on where you live in Austin). If you live on Lake Travis you know that this means that you spent this week wondering how all this water would affect you and how many times you are going to have to move your dock.

According to the LCRA website we started the week approximately 17 feet below the full level and we are ending the week at 10 feet below the full level. Which after the multi-year drought we endured over the past couple of summers this is a nice change of pace.

There is always the inevitable clean-up after a deluge such as this, but with the memory so fresh of what is like with no water I think we are all breathing a sigh of relief.

pertyLooking for Something Fun on Lake Travis this Labor Day Weekend ??

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

The Labor Day weekend is fast approaching and if you’re looking for somethng to do without having to drive a full day to get there look no further than Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. For most people Labor Day weekend is the official end to their summer, so why not have the most fun and make great memories to hold you through the long cold winter. (which in Texas means from January all the way through February)

If you are new to Austin you may not be aware that Town Lake and Lake Austin are not the only lakes that you have at your disposal. These three lakes are part of a larger chain of lakes managed by the LCRA called the Highland Lakes. Resorts, watercraft rentals and public areas abound for you to enjoy the shores of this wonderful area resource.

You can check out live music at Oasis, Carlos N Charlie’s, Cafe Blue, Shades, or Iguana Grill. Or rent a boat at Just For Fun, Daybreak Boat rentals, Lake Travis Boat rentals. There is fun for the whole family at the Daybreak Mini-Golf and Gemstone mining on HiLine Rd. Public access is available to Lake Travis at Mansfield Dam Park, Pace Bend Park and there are many more county parks offering public access for reasonable prices to enjoy the waterfront of Lake Travis.

If you are looking to buy real estate on Lake Travis or sell your Lake Travis property go to my website or call me at 512-560-0293. As a resident of Lake Travis I am available to show you property and am familiar with the inventory.

Lake Travis Water Level

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Consecutive days with over 100 degree temperatures have put a hurt on the Lake Travis water level. During the week of August 9th the water was at 670.88 feet and we are starting this week at 669.6 and the LCRA is predicting that by next week’s end it will be down to 668.50.

Please be sure to check your area’s watering schedule to ensure you are doing your part to conserve water. Most of Austin has been on some type of restricted schedule for most of this year.

The Austin Lake Life

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

“I don’t do windows”…we’ve all heard it before. I have even said it myself a few times, but when we moved into our new house on lake Travis it took on a whole new meaning. Our home is located in the flood plain of Lake Travis and therefore was built up on cement columns to protect it from the inevitable flood waters that have become the norm for life on the lake in Austin, Texas. This meant that 75% of my windows would require a 40 foot extension (some longer) ladder to be able to clean off the spiders webs, oak pollen and other various things that come with living near a body of water. And I don’t do ladders.

A few years ago a realtor friend recommended Paul the window guy to me when we were putting our first house on the market as part of preparation for the sale. So I decided to give him a call to see if he could help me out with my windows. Paul Drews came to the house and let out a long whistle, “You’ve got yourself one tall house.” Well after some strategerie he formed his plan and that Saturday set about cleaning our windows. We have had him back twice a year ever since. He is on time, efficient and has fair pricing. What more can you ask for from a contractor. You may have seen his truck around Hudson Bend it is bright yellow and says Window Cleaning 320-7575 and nothing more. Simple, just like Paul.

Since this is a real estate blog it is important for me to point out that when you are preparing to sell your home that cleaning your windows inside and out and will be one of the fastest ways to improve the look of your home. It is just amazing and until you’ve done it you can not realize how much of a difference it will make.

A Day Trip From Austin

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

While out taking updated photos for my listing at 306 Plainview Rd I made a detour into Wimberley. For a Monday afternoon the town was bustling with activity, which is no surprise with all of the eateries and shopping locations that are abundant in Wimberley.

Wimberley is a short drive from Austin and could be a wonderful location for a day trip for you and the family. Wimberley is also host to a weekly (Saturday) market days where they feature local vendors who sell homemade arts & crafts.

I recommend the lemon pie at Wimberley Pie Co. on RR 12.

The Austin Lake Life

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Living in Austin means that one day, if you’re lucky, you may be invited to the lake with a friend or co-worker who owns a boat. For people who have lived in and around the Ausitn area this is second nature and not something for extended contemplation, but for those who are not familiar with the water and the etiquette of sorts that accompanies such a trip it can be a huge learning experience. This goes along with the theme of not only living in Austin but also living the Austin lake life. This is what I would describe as a laid back attitude that people in Austin take about going about day to day tasks. Because there is so much to do indoors and out in this great city of ours.

Recently, I had an opportunity to accompany my mother-in-law to a United States Power Squadron Partner in Command class near Lake Travis. This class is all about how to assist the driver and in an emergency take command of the boat. As I sat in the class it became apparent to me that if I was learning at least a few things from this class then I should share some of it with everyone else who hasn’t had a chance to go. And possibly help them out in case they are invited to go boating on one of the Highland Lakes chain. In case you aren’t sure the lakes included in this chain of lakes are: Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis and Lake Austin.

On to the good stuff. Here are the top 5 things I learned.

  1. Children younger than 13 MUST wear a life jacket (PFD: personal flotation device) while away from the dock.
  2. Before you leave the dock the driver of the boat should educate everyone on the boat where the safety equipment is located and how to essentially operate the boat (or at least stop it) in case the driver is somehow incapacitated in some fashion while on the water.
  3. It is a good idea to pack an emergency kit with first aid items, water, and extra keys to the boat and your car.
  4. If boating alone make sure to tell someone where you plan on being and when you plan on returning.
  5. When anchoring your boat it is a good rule of thumb to release the rope in a 7:1 ratio. This is seven times more length of rope than the depth of the water.

Operating a boat is just as serious as driving a car. So it is always a good idea to educate yourself and those around you about how to operate it. This summary is just a brief overview of the class. Thoughts on Austin Real Estate

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Today while speaking to a friend of mine she complimented me on how I seem to really be committed to real estate unlike some agents she has met. This made me think about what sets real estate professionals apart. Then thinking even more about it I decided to write a blog about myself as an Austin real estate agent.

My Texas real estate salesperson license is less than two  years old, but I feel as if I have been in the business forever. With two degrees from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) one in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration I started my career working in government and then the private sector. As the staff accoutant for a high-end custom home builder in Lakeway I learned an immense amount about home construction and the industry that surrounded it. After five years in the office I decided that I wanted to be out in the field “making things happen” as opposed to watching from the sidelines. The excitement and energy of that office was inspiring and is exactly what led me to where I am today.

As an agent I have worked with Seller’s and Buyer’s and enjoyed both sides of the transactions. Being new to the contracts and other aspects of this I have appreciated being in an office like RE/MAX River City that is full of experienced agents and a broker who are always willing to help me through any questions I may have. If I don’t know the answer when you ask the question I am not afraid to find the answer for you.

So after all that I think here are three things you may not have known about your real estate agent, that I think you should know.

  1. A side note of being a real estate agent that no one thinks about is how you also are part couselor as well. Buying or selling a home is an extremely emotional situation and it essential that you are able to be a good listener and offer appropriate advice when solicited by your client.
  2. Real estate is glamorous…NOT. Although there are a lot of great perks to this job, like being completely justified in wearing your absolute best outfit on a Tuesday for no other reason than it’s Tuesday! Alot of times real estate agents are in the trenches doing the hard work so that a buyer can find just the right piece of property or that a listing has just the right curb appeal when the right buyer shows up.
  3. To the dismay and surprise of some real estate is a full-time job. Other than the obvious reasons, like contract deadlines don’t take breaks for holiday weekends etc. it is just not something you can do part-time. It becomes a way of life and any good agent is always looking for the next opportunity for their buyer or seller.
