The Austin Lake Life

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

“I don’t do windows”…we’ve all heard it before. I have even said it myself a few times, but when we moved into our new house on lake Travis it took on a whole new meaning. Our home is located in the flood plain of Lake Travis and therefore was built up on cement columns to protect it from the inevitable flood waters that have become the norm for life on the lake in Austin, Texas. This meant that 75% of my windows would require a 40 foot extension (some longer) ladder to be able to clean off the spiders webs, oak pollen and other various things that come with living near a body of water. And I don’t do ladders.

A few years ago a realtor friend recommended Paul the window guy to me when we were putting our first house on the market as part of preparation for the sale. So I decided to give him a call to see if he could help me out with my windows. Paul Drews came to the house and let out a long whistle, “You’ve got yourself one tall house.” Well after some strategerie he formed his plan and that Saturday set about cleaning our windows. We have had him back twice a year ever since. He is on time, efficient and has fair pricing. What more can you ask for from a contractor. You may have seen his truck around Hudson Bend it is bright yellow and says Window Cleaning 320-7575 and nothing more. Simple, just like Paul.

Since this is a real estate blog it is important for me to point out that when you are preparing to sell your home that cleaning your windows inside and out and will be one of the fastest ways to improve the look of your home. It is just amazing and until you’ve done it you can not realize how much of a difference it will make.

The Austin Lake Life

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Living in Austin means that one day, if you’re lucky, you may be invited to the lake with a friend or co-worker who owns a boat. For people who have lived in and around the Ausitn area this is second nature and not something for extended contemplation, but for those who are not familiar with the water and the etiquette of sorts that accompanies such a trip it can be a huge learning experience. This goes along with the theme of not only living in Austin but also living the Austin lake life. This is what I would describe as a laid back attitude that people in Austin take about going about day to day tasks. Because there is so much to do indoors and out in this great city of ours.

Recently, I had an opportunity to accompany my mother-in-law to a United States Power Squadron Partner in Command class near Lake Travis. This class is all about how to assist the driver and in an emergency take command of the boat. As I sat in the class it became apparent to me that if I was learning at least a few things from this class then I should share some of it with everyone else who hasn’t had a chance to go. And possibly help them out in case they are invited to go boating on one of the Highland Lakes chain. In case you aren’t sure the lakes included in this chain of lakes are: Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis and Lake Austin.

On to the good stuff. Here are the top 5 things I learned.

  1. Children younger than 13 MUST wear a life jacket (PFD: personal flotation device) while away from the dock.
  2. Before you leave the dock the driver of the boat should educate everyone on the boat where the safety equipment is located and how to essentially operate the boat (or at least stop it) in case the driver is somehow incapacitated in some fashion while on the water.
  3. It is a good idea to pack an emergency kit with first aid items, water, and extra keys to the boat and your car.
  4. If boating alone make sure to tell someone where you plan on being and when you plan on returning.
  5. When anchoring your boat it is a good rule of thumb to release the rope in a 7:1 ratio. This is seven times more length of rope than the depth of the water.

Operating a boat is just as serious as driving a car. So it is always a good idea to educate yourself and those around you about how to operate it. This summary is just a brief overview of the class. I’m Not From Austin, But I Got Here as Fast as I Could…

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Austin is a unique species to Texas and if you haven’t been here for more than a layover in the airport you may not be able to understand that. It was evident to me within the first few hours of moving here in May of 2000. Having grown up in Blanco just a short hour drive from Austin I was aware of it’s existence and even participated in the night life of Austin while attending what was then Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, but actually living here is a whole new experience.

My story with Austin starts like this…I came to Austin for the week of preparations for my sister’s wedding and while she was on her honeymoon I decided I liked it so much I should stay. Imagine my newly minted brother-in-law’s surprise when he returned from his honeymoon to find his new bride’s sister had set up camp in their spare bedroom. It made perfect sense to me and Daniel was more than welcoming (as any good Austinite would be).

Time marched on I became gainly employed by the State of Texas and I set about exploring all of what Austin had to offer. This was made easier by the fact that I was dating a true Austinite. Someone who had lived here (almost) his entire life. Justin was born in Houston, but moved to Austin as a child with his family. Something that became very clear to me right away was that Austin was not set-up in the same fashion as other cities and the people weren’t exactly the same either. In one day you could see the Governor eating at the Texas Chili Parlor and local celebrities walking through downtown on 6th Street.

Well, I started thinking about this because of a flyer I received from Independence Title Company that really sums the Austin experience it’s called “The Austin Old-Timer’s Guide to Bein’ From Here.”

Tarrytown Bungalow Up in the Air

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Over the weekend The Austin American Statesman real estate section had an article about a builder in Tarrytown that is using innovative ideas to grow the neighborhood without impacting the architectural integrity and charm of central Austin. Christian Bingham took building to the next level when he lifted a bungalow one full story to build additional living space on the ground level. You should check it out here.
