How Do You Say Puyallup?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Daffodils growing in the shadow of Mt. RainierFirst off, let’s deal with the pronunciation problem.  To say Puyallup properly, start with Pew.  As in Pepé le Pew.  Then add the word Gallop, only without the ‘G’.  Put it together and you have Pew-allop…Puyallup!   That’s it!

Puyallup is a Native American word that means ‘the generous people’.  I like that.

Puyallup sits in the shadow of Mount Rainier, the tallest volcano in the continental United States.  The Puyallup River flows through downtown.  The areas surrounding the river are some of the most fertile in the nation.  Home to fields of tulips and daffodils, for which the city boasts a huge parade each year, the Daffodil Festival.  The city also has one of the largest privately owned fair grounds in the country (over 160 acres) with the largest outdoor concert stage in the Pacific Northwest.  Doing the Puyallup Fair has been a passion for us for over 100 years.

We celebrate the arts with sculptures and statues found all over downtown, ranging from the silly to the spectacular.  Antique stores abound along downtown streets.  A large park in the center of town is host to concerts in the summer and a thriving farmer’s market on weekends celebrating the bountiful harvests our valley is famous for.

Homey and wonderful, Puyallup celebrates her uniqueness.  From the Ezra Meeker Beard Contest, to the Seafair Pirates storming the library, to the cattle drive on the downtown streets marking the opening of the fair, there is always some cause to celebrate.

Must do’s:

Scones with strawberry jam

Hobby Hall at the Fairgrounds

Touring the Meeker Mansion

Antique shopping

Listening to the trains roar past Trackside Pizza

Watching the Daffodil Parade

I LOVE PUYALLUP!
