What is new with the Wake County Public Schools?

Welcome to my new blog site about the Wake County Public Schools! A little about me – I have lived in Wake County since 1977, and am married to a “Raleigh boy”.  I have been an active volunteer and community member of the Wake County Public School System’s two Student Assignment Parent Advisory Committees for over eleven years, and PTA president or executive office holder at the school or county PTA level, of every school my two children attended over the years. I have also successfully advocated for parent and student friendlier policy changes to the Wake County Board of Education.

Our neighborhood school system here in Wake County has been receiving more than its share of press in the last 14 months – some good, and some questionable.  If you have been thinking of a move to Wake County, are wondering about the Wake County Public School System and want to know what is going on here in Wake County, you are at the right blog! This blog’s purpose is to understand the ramifications of Wake County Board of Education’s decisions on my industry – the real estate industry, and also to bring a focus to the programs and offerings of our great schools here.  People have passionate beliefs regarding education, and all opinions are valid.  The bottom line is, and always will be, which school is right for my child.  But, understanding the decisions the BOE makes, how much these decisions cost the taxpayer, and how does that cost affect me and my property value is important as well.

Good schools are an integral part of a homes’ value. My experience with WCPSS and its’ assignment policies can help you made the most informed decision before buying a home. I will be watching the Wake County Board of Education and their decisions, and report back to you after their meetings with thoughts as it pertains to real estate, links to varying opinions, articles and websites commenting on their decisions. I also plan to highlight different programs and schools in my blog – focusing on a school or magnet program of interest a week, and what great things are happening in that school.  Each school has its own vibrancy, its own personality.  Just as children come in all shapes, sizes, with different learning styles and interests, our schools here in Wake County do too!  When your child attends the perfect match for them, learning is fun!

The most exciting event of the year is the Wake County Public School Magnet Program application period – February 21st through March 7.  Magnet school tours are happening now.  The schedule can be seen at

http://www.wcpss.net/news/2011_jan21_magnet_info_sessions/

Our magnet acceptances are based on a lottery, not academics.  If you are interested in the magnet program, I encourage you to visit the site and tour the schools to feel that school’s energy yourself!
